Prostitution

In my mind, there seems to be something sleazy about paying someone for sex. Particularly when you consider that street prostitution tends to be closely linked to drug abuse and addiction as well as sexually transmitted diseases including HIV/Aids. Street prostitutes are at a particularly high risk of being robbed, assaulted, raped or even murdered by customers or pimps and are also at a high risk for being arrested.

Having said this, you can't make prostitution go away by making it illegal. There will always be women or men prepared to sell their bodies and there will always be customers for this. I personally think that legalised brothels would be safer if they were run properly as this would mean the sex workers would have regular health checks, condom use would be mandatory to prevent the spread of STDs and their environment would reduce their risk of being abused by customers.

I also think that if someone is forced into prostitution by their circumstances (e.g. running away from home, substance addiction) then they should receive help. If someone chooses to be a prostitute for whatever reason (such as Belle du Jour) then whatever my personal views, if it's not hurting anyone then I don't see a problem.
